Innovative trends in historical description in the 1980-2000s in Western historiography

The course is offered at the Faculty of History of the Institute of History and Archives of RSUH by the Department of History and Theory of Historical Science.

The purpose of the course is to acquaint students with the latest trends in the development of Western historical science and develop their skills in reading and discussing academic texts in English.

Objectives of the course:

  1. identify the academic and socio-political factors that determine the development of modern Western historiography;
  2. study such trends in Western historiography as new political history, new cultural history, history of memory, global history, history of empires, local history, intellectual history, "publichistory";
  3. master the special terminology and style characteristic of the English language-based historiography;
  4. develop speaking skills.

The discipline forms the following professional competencies (PC):

PC-2: Ability to use knowledge of special historical disciplines, historiography and modern methods for historical research.

At the end of the course, the students are expected to:

  • know the main areas of modern Western historiography, their theoretical foundations and research practices, main special historical and historiographic disciplines.
  • be able to use the special methods of historical science, read professional literature in English, convey in English the main idea of the text, express opinion and take part in a discussion.
  • have mastered modern methods of professional historical research, professional terminology and style characteristic of English language-based historiography.
