The Interactive Atlas of the Small-Numbered Peoples of the North, Siberia, and the Far East has been updated with video documenting in detail the stages of a Nenets family’s preparation for winter migration.
The footage shows a sequence of actions refined over centuries: women dismantle the chum, carefully remove the nyuki (reindeer-hide coverings), pull out the poles, and place bedding, utensils, and other belongings onto sledges in a precise order that allows for quick assembly at the next site.
The video, created by researcher A. V. Golovnev, serves as an important record of traditional Nenets domestic organization and worldview, in which migration is a fundamental means of living in harmony with nature.
The Atlas is a large-scale resource for preserving and popularizing unique cultural heritage.
