The project of RSUH, The Interactive Atlas of the Small-Numbered Peoples of the North, Siberia, and the Far East, has been expanded with a video recording featuring Gulnara Kimovna Lapukom, a keeper of the Evenki language and culture and a methodologist at the Evenki Regional Museum.
In the video, Gulnara Kimovna performs an Evenki fairy tale about a bear and a chipmunk, explaining the origin of the chipmunk’s stripes. Recorded during the 20th International Anniversary Exhibition Treasures of the North, the tale is not only a valuable piece of folklore but also a vivid example of the oral tradition through which wisdom and moral lessons are passed down using images from the natural world.
The Atlas is a large-scale resource for the preservation and promotion of unique cultural heritage. You can watch the tale and hear the storyteller’s commentary in the media library of the Interactive Atlas. You can learn more about Evenki culture via the link.
