The development of East and Africa discussed at RSUH

On December 19, the international conference “East and Africa in the transformation of modern reality” was held at RSUH

Dr. Nikita Filin delivered a welcoming speech thanking the participants for their interest and spoke about the history of the creation and work of the educational departments of RSUH, engaged in African studies and oriental studies.

Acting Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies and Social and Communication Sciences Alexander Akramov and Director of the Museum Center of RSUH Irina Viktorovna Bakanova also spoke at the plenary session.

At the plenary session, the director of the International Research Center for Applied African Studies Alexander Zotin, spoke about the shapes of the modern neo-colonialism in Africa. The Plenipotentiary Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Sudan, Ahmed Khalifa, described the development of the armed conflict in Sudan between the Rapid Reaction Forces and the legitimate government of the country. The presentation on the modern political system of the Federal Republic of Somalia was made by the Director of the Center for the Study of Stability and Risks at the HSE Andrey Korotaev. The presentation of Nikolai Medushevsky, professor of the Department of Modern East and Africa of RSUH, was dedicated to the political crisis in Somalia and its role in destabilizing regional politics.

Professor of the Department of Modern East and Africa of RSUH Lana Ravandi-Fadai highlighted the topic of the ethno-confessional problem of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The participants of the section “Foreign policy of Asian and African countries and the role of extra-regional players” examined the causes of anti-colonial revolutions, issues of neo-colonialism in the context of the current geopolitical situation in the world and analyzed colonial policy in the countries of France.

Ethnic conflicts in Sudan, features of the electoral system of the Arab Republic of Egypt at the present stage and the history of the movement for self-determination of Kabylia, the image of Islam in the state discourse of the French Republic, as well as the transformation of the legal status of women after the establishment of Islam in Iran were discussed at the section “Socio-political and religious processes in Asian and African countries.”

The participants in the section “Economy, education and social processes in Asian and African countries” discussed the specifics of Somali migration, export and import of agricultural products in the Republic of Chad, agricultural production in Central African countries and international cooperation of Iranian universities in the context of sanctions policy.

The youth section of the club of young orientalists and Africanists of RSUH included the topics of building relations between the EU and the Arab Maghreb Union in the late 1990s - early 2000s, the role of Uganda in the system of international cooperation, the transformation of the media in Egypt and the protest culture of countries South Africa.
