“To Serve the Profession Defending Rights”: Interview with RSUH Associate Professor Polina Zemskova

On December 10, the international community celebrates Human Rights Day. What does this holiday mean for a practicing lawyer? Polina Zemskova, Associate Professor at the Department of Legal Theory and Comparative Law at the RSUH Institute of Law, shares her thoughts.

This year, the UN’s theme for the holiday is “Human rights, our everyday reality.” What does this formulation mean to you as a practicing lawyer?

The entire modern legal system in the civilized world is oriented toward human rights. Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that regardless of the branch of law in which you practice—corporate, environmental, or otherwise—you are, in one way or another, defending human rights.

What challenges exist today for the protection of human rights in a rapidly changing world?

At the top of the list is, of course, rapid digitalization.

Which professional principles learned during your student years continue to guide your legal practice today?

A lawyer’s greatest enemy is excessive self-confidence.

The RSUH Institute of Law is part of a large humanities university. How does this environment affect legal training and distinguish our graduates?

Cicero demanded that orators possess “the wit of a dialectician, the thoughts of a philosopher, and speech approaching that of a poet.” These demands apply fully both to courtroom speakers and to lawyers in general.
