RSUH analyzed historical destinies of the indigenous peoples of Eastern Siberia and Australia

On January 15, the conference “Eastern Siberia and Australia: from the fate of man to the fate of the people” was held, dedicated to the results of the Russian Science Foundation project “On the frontier of cultures: from individual biographies to the historical destinies of ethnic communities (Evenks of Siberia and indigenous Australians in the context of modernization)"

The event was opened by the Deputy Director of the Center for Social Anthropology of RSUH Olga Artemova: “The project was aimed at studying how the consequences of long-term contacts between strikingly different cultures manifest themselves in the destinies of people. A central role in the work was played by field research in the settlements of small indigenous peoples of Russia and Australia, who had experienced powerful socio-economic and socio-psychological upheavals in the processes of colonization and acculturation."/p>

Professor of the Center for Social Anthropology Maxim Mikhalev spoke about the positive and negative aspects of road construction and their impact on the lives of indigenous peoples. Dmitry Dolgikh, a specialist in educational and methodological work at the Center for Social Anthropology, spoke about changes in the everyday life and social relationships of the Evenks after the construction of the Baikal-Amur Mainline. The experts touched upon the topics of the Evenki experience (in a global context), the strategy of missionary work among the Evenks of the Okhotsk region of the Khabarovsk Territory and the Aldan district of Yakutia. The participants discussed the events of the recent history of the Okhotsk region of the Khabarovsk Territory, issues of culture and life of the Evenks and indigenous Australians from the point of view of visual anthropology.

The speakers were: Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Director of the Center for Social Anthropology of the RSUH Valery Tishkov, Director of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry Funk, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Deputy Director of the Institute of African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry Bondarenko, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the Center for Cross-Cultural Psychology and Human Ethology of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology Marina Butovskaya, Head of the Department of the North and Siberia of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology Elena Pivneva, and others.
