Press conference “History in the media: modern approaches to the popularization of science”

On November 20, 2023, a press conference “History in the media: modern approaches to the popularization of science” was held at the International Multimedia Press Center “Russia Today”. The press conference is timed to coincide with the start of the 2nd School-Congress of Young Historians and Representatives of the Youth Media Center under the Russian Ministry of Education and Science

The participants discussed current issues of popularization and history and preservation of historical memory in the media, as well as the aspects of the training of authors of historical content.

Dr. Konstantin Mogilevsky, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, spoke about the measures that the Ministry takes to support young media workers and popularizers of history.

Olga Zanko, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee of the Russian Federation for the Development of Civil Society, Issues of Public and Religious Associations, made a presentation of projects for the preservation of historical memory implemented by the All-Russian Public Movement "Volunteers of Victory".

Ruslan Gagkuev, Chairman of the Board of the Russian Historical Society, Executive Director of the History of the Fatherland Foundation, noted the importance of popularizing history in the media and shared information about media projects implemented by the Russian Historical Society.

Dr. Vladislav Flyarkovsky, Director of the Institute of Mass Media and Advertising of RSUH, spoke of the importance of the journalistic profession in projects to popularize history.

Veronika Krasheninnikova, General Director of the autonomous non-profit organization “Institute of Foreign Policy Research and Initiatives”, said: “Basic awareness of history is one of the main constructs of a patriot and citizen who is not indifferent to the fate of his Motherland.”

Dr. Elena Barysheva, Dean of the Faculty of History of the Institute of History and Archives of RSUH, spoke about how to use academic knowledge and methods in popularization activities.

Ivan Kulakov, coordinator of the Youth Club of the Russian Historical Society spoke about the School-Congress in 2023: “The goal of the project is to develop approaches and methods for creating and promoting historical content in the media space by young people”.

The participants in the School-Congress will be 70 undergraduate and graduate students majoring in history. The group includes representatives from Armenia, Belarus and Kirghizia, as well as representatives of the Youth Media Center under the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.The format of the School-Congress includes lectures and master classes from leading experts in the field of history and journalism.
