Heir of a shamanic lineage: Nganasan poetry enters the media library of the RSUH Interactive Atlas

A new video recording has entered the Interactive Atlas of the Small-Numbered Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East. In it, Lidia Aksenova, a senior research associate of the Taimyr Regional Museum and granddaughter of the shaman Demnime Kosterkin, recites a poem in her native Nganasan language.

The material was recorded during the 20th International Exhibition “Treasures of the North”. Lidia Kundyleevna not only preserves the cultural heritage in a museum, but is herself a living part of it. Working on the exhibition about her clan “Parallel Worlds of Tubyaku Kosterkin”, she shares her deep personal knowledge about the life, beliefs, and folklore of the Nganasans, backed by her own experience living in a traditional dwelling.

The Atlas continues to create a digital space to preserve unique heritage. You may watch the video with her performance in the Atlas media library. More details about Nganasan culture are available on the project site.
