First Russian archival and documentary exhibition opened in Africa

The city of Harare (Zimbabwe) hosted the grand opening of an archival and documentary exhibition, dedicated to the assistance of the USSR and Russia to African countries in the struggle for independence. The exhibition was prepared by RSUH with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation and the Institute for African Studies of Zimbabwe

This is the first Russian archival and documentary exhibition on the African continent. It includes materials from the state archives of Russia and Zimbabwe and photographs from the private archives of participants in the African liberation movement.

“The Zimbabwean people fought a long war against colonialism and the British settlers who mercilessly oppressed them. The USSR made a huge contribution to its successful completion. Today is not just the opening day of the exhibition for us, it is the day of the Russians in Zimbabwe,” said Christopher Mutsvangwa, Minister for Welfare Services for War Veterans.

The Exhibition is located on the territory of the “City of Liberation” memorial complex, which is being created in Harare, where the Museum of African Liberation, research and educational institutions, and recreational facilities are being built. The authorities also plan to erect the first monument in Africa dedicated to the victory of the USSR in the Great Patriotic War.
