Childhood in the Arctic: Traditional Socialization of Nenets Children Enriches RSUH Interactive Atlas Archive

The Interactive Atlas the North, Siberia, and the Far East has been expanded with unique materials from the archives of the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera).

The video captures scenes from the lives of Nenets children on the coast of the Kara Sea: sledge games, exploration of the surrounding environment through movement, and participation in community activities. These moments reveal the depth of a traditional upbringing model where there is no strict boundary between play, learning, and labor. Children are naturally integrated into the economic cycle, learning essential skills through observation and practice within the family circle. These materials are a valuable record of a distinctive path of socialization, in which the younger generation, from an early age, masters the land, understands the laws of nomadic life, and inherits centuries-old experience of survival and harmonious existence in the Arctic environment.

The video archive reflecting the organic relationship between childhood and the traditional way of life is available on the RSUH Interactive Atlas website.
