All-Russian Conference "Regional Studies of Russia"

On December 13-14, the All-Russian Conference "Regional Studies of Russia" was held at RSUH, timed to coincide with the Year of the Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of Russia.

The event was held by the Center “New Russia. History of Post-Soviet Russia" of the Faculty of History of the Institute of History and Archives of RSUH with the support of the "History of the Fatherland" foundation and the Russian Historical Society.

The conference was attended by Rector Bezborodov, Director of the Educational Center “New Russia. History of Post-Soviet Russia” and Chairman of the Board of the Russian Historical Society Dr. Konstantin Mogilevsky, Dean of the Faculty of History of the Institute of History and Archives of RSUH Dr. Elena Barysheva, researchers and scholars from various regions of Russia, students of RSUH specializing in regional studies of Russia, history of modern Russia, public policy and social sciences.

Dr. Mogilevsky outlined the main trends in the study of Russian regional history in schools and universities. He noted: “Our country is multi-ethnic and multi-confessional, its history is made up of the history of our territories. For any person, the feeling of the Motherland combines regional and all-Russian identities.

Rector Bezborodov emphasized that a new educational program "Regional Studies of Russia" had begun at RSUH in 2022. “Many scholars of the Institute of History and Archives devoted their works to the study of local history issues. Together with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, RSUH is implementing state projects that relate to culture, history, art, and research of youth issues of the indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation,” the Rector said.

Dr. Viktor Berdinskikh, Chief Researcher of the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Komi Center of the Ural Branch of RAS, spoke on importance of creating a unified system of archives in the Soviet period for the development of domestic regional studies.

Director of the Omsk State Museum of Local History Dr. Petr Vibe highlighted the problems of modern domestic local history and ways to solve them, noted the differences between "specialist local historians" and "amateur local historians", giving a definition of the term "local history movement".

Professor of the RAS Alexei Zagrebin devoted his presentation to the historiographic heritage of regional studies in Russia and its academic and educational prospects.

Professor of the Altai State University Petr Dashkovsky and Associate Professor of the Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University Luiza Karimova shared their experience in implementing educational and academic programs in the field "Regional Studies of Russia" in their universities.

Professor of Orenburg State Pedagogical University Sergey Lyubichankovsky and teacher of history and social studies at Angarsk Gymnasium No. 8 Olga Grigorieva raised questions about the peculiarities of teaching local history in the Soviet school and regional history in modern schools.

Dr. Anatoly Savchenko, Deputy Director for Science and Development of the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Peoples of the Far East of the Far Eastern Branch of RAS, spoke about the peculiarities of the methodological and organizational problems of regional studies in Russia.

After the plenary session, the work of the Conference continued at the sections "Historical and cultural development of the regions of Russia: general trends and unique phenomena", "Regional studies and historical local history in Russia: history and prospects of development ".
