"New Russia Scientific and Educational Center. The history of post-Soviet Russia".
The purpose of the Center is to create a scientific school for the study and teaching of the national history of the Russian Federation and to form historians who see and analyze the history of modern Russia and its place in the world in an interdisciplinary manner. To promote their professional growth, actively involve students, graduate students and teachers of the Institute in scientific activities and fundamental scientific research, as well as the implementation and development of educational programs in the Bachelor's degree program "History" (profile "History of modern Russia"), "Public Policy and Social Sciences" (profile "Public Policy and Social Sciences"), "Regional Studies of Russia" (profile "Historical and cultural development of Russia") and Master’s degree programs "Public Policy in modern Russia".

Among the fundamental courses of the Department are: History of Historical Science, Theory and Methodology of History, History of everyday life, Historical Psychology, History of Russian Law, Political History of Russia, etc.
The practical block of disciplines is represented by various courses aimed at forming the foundations of the professional culture of a modern historian: the Laboratory of Historical Research, Methods of teaching history, Practical stylistics and literary editing of historical texts, Modern Russian historical journalism, and Historical Internet design.
The department is the organizer of the annual international scientific conference "The Future of our Past". In 2025, it was held for the tenth time.

The Yu.V. Knorozov Mesoamerican Educational and Scientific Center is the only scientific and educational center in Russia and one of the few in Europe focused on the study and teaching of the history and culture of pre-Columbian civilizations, traditional societies and Latin American states. The Center's activities are aimed at preserving and developing the scientific school of Yu.V. Knorozov, who decrypted the Maya script.

The Department of Universal History is one of the oldest in the Historical and Archival Institute of the Russian State University for the Humanities. It has existed since the 1930s. Since 2020, the Department of Unversal History has been a part of the Faculty of History. Every year dozens of students come to the Department to write term papers and final qualifying papers on various topics from the history of the Ancient World to Modern times. Interested graduates regularly enroll in postgraduate studies in general history and successfully defend their dissertations for the degree of Candidate of Historical Sciences. Since 2023, under the leadership of the Head of the Department, P.N. Lebedev, the Faculty of History has opened the educational program "History of International Relations: Russia and the World" (Bachelor's degree, specialty 46.03.01 "History"), which has already trained several sets of students. The teachers of the department carry out scientific work by publishing textbooks and monographs, as well as publishing articles in periodicals included in the core of the RSCI and the leading international scientometric databases Scopus and Web of Science.

The Department of Auxiliary Historical Disciplines and Archeography is one of the oldest departments in the Historical and Archival Institute( IAI) . It was established in 1939, since 1994 it has been called the Department of Source Studies and Auxiliary Historical Disciplines, in 2011 independent departments of source studies and auxiliary historical disciplines were formed on its basis, and in 2018 the Department of Auxiliary Historical Disciplines was merged with the Department of Archaeography, which existed at IAI since 1957.
Many leading historical scientists have worked at the Department. The department conducts large-scale scientific research, conducts pedagogical, and popularization activities in the entire range of auxiliary (special) historical disciplines: paleography and the history of book culture, historical chronology, historical metrology, historical geography and cartography, onomastics, numismatics, sphragistics, heraldry, genealogy, symbolism and emblematic, in the field of the Old Russian language, information heuristics and archeography.
Since 1989, the Department has regularly held International scientific conferences on auxiliary historical disciplines, which bring together more than 200 speakers from many regions of Russia and from abroad (countries near and far abroad).
The Department maintains a unique museum collection of monuments on the history of Russia of the XIV–XX centuries. (paleography, diplomacy, numismatics, heraldry, sphragistics, an old printed book, etc.).
The Department carries out extensive pedagogical and popularization work, cooperating with leading museums and libraries, including the State Hermitage Museum, the State Historical Museum, the Moscow Kremlin Museums, the Museum of Books of the Russian State Library, the Museum of Entrepreneurs, Patrons and Benefactors, the Russian National Library, the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences, etc. Practical classes with RGGU students in auxiliary historical disciplines are conducted, among other things, based on Moscow museum collections.

The Department of History of State Institutions and Public Organizations (DHSIPO) established in 1952. Renamed in 1975. One of the founders of the department was Dr. prof. Yeroshkin N. P.
A special feature of the scientific and pedagogical school of the Department is the study of national history through state and public institutions. Over the past quarter of a century, the Department has prepared 12 candidates and 2 doctoral dissertations, published about 1,000 articles in scientific, popular science, socio-political periodicals, encyclopedias and collections of scientific papers.

The department began its activity on April 1, 1931 and was called the Department of History and Economic Disciplines, and renamed later as the Department of History of the USSR. The traditional areas of scientific and educational activity for the Department are complemented by various anthropological aspects of Russian history. And include the history of everyday life, the study of religiosity, Slavic ethnogenesis, historiography, the history of the Russian Orthodox Church, the ethnosocial history of peoples of Russia, as well as studies of culture within the framework of the newly developed concept of historical phenomenology.

The main purpose of the courses taught by the teachers of the Department of Modern Russian History
is to form a historically specific, systematic and holistic view of the content, specifics and stages of the historical path of Russia in modern times, the formation of the main dominants of its development. The subject of the course on the history of Russia and the history of national culture is defined by the chronological limits of the modern period (from 1917 to the present), and is understood as a cumulative and multidimensional development process in the main forms of its self-realization (economic, social, political, cultural, spiritual spheres).
