International master double degree program "Russian culture"

(RSUH - Ruhr University, Bochum, Germany)

‘Russian culture’ is the first international double degree master program in RSUH, started in 2007. The Moscow part of the curriculum bases on the courses of the International educational and scientific center “Higher school of European cultures” (HSEC) (http://rsuh.ru/vshek, http://vshek.ru), the German part is developed by the Institute of Russian culture named after Yu.M. Lotman in the Ruhr University (Bochum, Germany). Since 2007 (till 2016) 75 Russian and 49 German students studied the program, 44 students from RSUH passed the semester internship in Bochum, 62 undergraduate and graduate students from Germany, Austria and Italy did the same in HSEC. During these years (2007 – 2016), 30 students of RSUH and 9 students of Ruhr University received two degrees - Master of Cultural Studies (RSUH) and the Master of Arts (Ruhr University).

Many courses from the Russian part of the curriculum are dedicated to the contemporary state of Russian culture or its history in the Soviet period (e.g. "Russian visual culture", "Soviet mass culture: genre cinema", "Post-Soviet and Soviet cinema: forms of interaction", "Analysis of the (Russian) Internet discourse", "Cultural institutions in modern society and the postmodern: Russia and the West"  etc.). The methodological part is also well represented (“Theory and practice of the analysis of literary texts: literature and cinema", "Methods and approaches of visual studies", "Cultural studies in the modern world", "Contemporary cultural studies in Russia"). Last but not least, the program also contains courses designed specifically for foreign interns (e.g. "Languages for professional and everyday communication in the contemporary Russian social and cultural context"). It is worth mentioning that foreign students are also able to engage in courses on Russian literature and Russian language in the Institute of Philology and History and in Institute of Linguistics at Russian State University for the Humanities.

The German international partner of HSEC is the Lotman Institute of Russian culture, the largest center of Slavic studies in North Rhine-Westphalia. Cooperation of RSUH and RUB has begun as early as 1995, when in collaboration with the Ecole des Hautes Etudes (Paris, France) was founded Institute of European cultures, which since 2007 has become the Higher School of European cultures of RSUH. The international master's program "Russian culture" provides academic exchange for students of the RSUH and RUB for one semester with the financial support of the DAAD. So, in 2017-2018 five schoraschips are granted for each side yearly for one semester at the partner university.
