On the 6th of December, 1993, 40 days after the death of Y.M. Lotman, readings in his memory took place in the Higher Humanities Research Institute in RSUH. Since that time the Higher Humanities Research Institute in RSUH conducts these already traditional conferences every year. This year the conference was preceded by tragic events. In November – December, 2005 the Higher Humanities Research Institute in RSUH has suffered great, irreplaceable losses. The Director of the Institute Eleasar Moiseevich Meletinskiy, leading researchers, academicians Michail Leonovich Gasparov and Vladimir Nicolaevich Toporov have passed away. Because of this the first day of the regular readings was dedicated to these outstanding scientists.
