On October 20-21, Russian State University for the Humanities hosted the international conference "60 Years after the Caribbean Crisis: Lessons from History for the Present". The event was organized by the Russian State University for the Humanities jointly with the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The event was opened by Rector Bezborodov. The Academic Director of the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dr. Chubaryan, in his welcoming address, discussed the agreement of mutual understanding between Khrushchev and Kennedy, as well as the lessons of the Caribbean crisis for modern international relations.The Conference participants were greeted by Mr. Jack Matlock, the US Ambassador to the USSR in 1987-1991, who stressed the need to recognize the danger of a nuclear confrontation and the special responsibility of the United States and Russia as the leading nuclear powers for maintaining peace on Earth.
At the plenary session, Vice-Rector Pavlenko delivered a presentation "Negotiation process in the Soviet-American relations: the experience of the Caribbean crisis."
Dr. Alexei Filitov made a presentation “The Caribbean Crisis vs. the Berlin Crisis”, in which he discussed the need to find compromises and the interconnectedness of conflicts in various regions of the world during the Cold War era.
A separate thematic block of the plenary session was devoted to interpreting the events of the Caribbean Crisis through the perception of its participants and contemporaries.
The Conference lasted two days, with three sections: “Images of the Caribbean crisis in the past and present”; “The Caribbean Crisis in International and National Contexts” and "The Caribbean Crisis in Historiographical Discourse".
The conference ended with a round table "Lessons from the Caribbean crisis for contemporary international relations".
