On May 12, our students met with Mr. Goran Petronijevic, the Judge of the Court over the heads of NATO member states in connection with the bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, and with Mr. Goran Šimpraga, a journalist and the producer of the film "NATO kills - NATO judges".
Mr. Goran Petronijevic is one of the most famous lawyers in Serbia, who defended the ex-leader of the Bosnian Serbs Radovan Karadžić before the Hague Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. He is also the author of the book “NATO in the Court of History”.
The event was attended by Rector Bezborodov, Dr. Ekaterina Kopylova Advisor to the Office of the President of the Russian Federation for Public Projects, First Vice-Rector Olga Pavlenko, Vice-Rector for Youth Policy and Social Work Irakli Bolkvadze, Dr. Nadezhda Arkhipova, Advisor to the Rector of RSUH, Dr. Stanislav Timofeev, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Yevgeny Kozhokin, Dean of the Faculty of International Relations, Political Science and Foreign Area Studies, Dr. Nikolai Lepe, Dean of the Faculty of Management, as well as heads of various offices of the University.
The Rector noted the importance of the meeting of students with the speakers in the framework of the educational process.
“RSUH is continuing a series of meetings with representatives of the friendly Serbian people. Our peoples show fraternal feelings towards each other. Such support is important for Russia today,” Alexander Bezborodov said in his opening speech.
As part of the event, the documentary "NATO kills - NATO judges" was screened. The film tells about the 1999 NATO bombing of the capital of Yugoslavia, Belgrade, during which the building of the state television and radio company Radio and Television of Serbia was destroyed, and describes the fate of Mr. Dragoljub Milanovic, its General Director.
Goran Šimpraga told the students that the Nobel Prize winner in literature, the Austrian writer and playwright Peter Handke, the Russian journalist Yevgeny Baranov and many other famous personalities had taken part in the filming.
Mr. Goran Petronijevic spoke about the political and migration situation in Serbia after the collapse of Yugoslavia and about his work at the Hague Tribunal. He was the defense coordinator for the former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic, and Serbian politician Vojislav Šešelj.
He added that he considers the peoples of Serbia and Russia to be brothers. “Many call us Serbs “little Russians” and perceive us as Russians,” he said.
He also added that he did not agree with the opinion of many Western journalists that Serbia should join in the sanctions against the Russian Federation in connection with the special operation in Ukraine. On the contrary, he emphasized that the Serbian people would always stand together with Russia.
After the speech the students asked the speaker questions about the attitude of the world towards the representatives of Serbia, about the fake information and its impact on social processes. In addition, a question was raised about the information that Kosovo had applied for membership in the Council of Europe.
Summing up the meeting, Rector Bezborodov expressed his gratitude to the invited speakers for an open and important dialogue with students.
