RSUH Improves the Quality of Training for Historian-Archivists

At the Institute of History and Archives of RSUH, a meeting was held with the participation of Rector Andrei Loginov and Head of the Federal Archives Agency Andrei Artizov. The topic of discussion was the training of future historian-archivists amid the transformation of higher education in the country.

Speaking to the audience, Andrei Loginov reminded them that for many years the Institute of History and Archives of RSUH had been a flagship in the field of archival education. Many of today's leaders of archival institutions, respected within the professional community of archivists and document science experts, are graduates of the Institute of History and Archives of RSUH.

“We acutely feel the responsibility for the future of archival education and see our mission, as the leading university for training archivists and document specialists, as setting priorities and defining the tone for archival education in the country. We hope that the scientific-methodological meetings on issues of archival education—of which today’s is the first—will become a permanent coordinating and consultative body. They will allow us to ‘synchronize our watches’ in our work to improve the quality of training,” noted Andrei Loginov.

Director of the Federal Archives Agency Andrei Artizov emphasized that it was necessary to create a new format of relationships between practicing archivists and the university that trained professionals in this field.

“Our task is to discuss in as much detail as possible the plans for training historian-archivists and to develop a high-quality curriculum so that the Institute of History and Archives of RSUH is prepared to transition to a basic five-year educational program that takes modern realities into account. The draft curriculum must necessarily be developed not only with representatives of the academic community, but also with specialists from federal archival institutions,” emphasized Andrei Artizov.

The curriculum will be ready by the end of September 2025. Under the new program, graduates of the Institute of History and Archives of RSUH will possess competencies and skills in analytical, expert, prognostic, source-study, and historical-educational work necessary for a modern historian.

In practical terms, graduates will not only master the craft of the archivist, but also be capable of addressing fundamentally new tasks related to digital transformation, the creation of digital images and electronic copies of archival documents, databases, electronic search systems, and digital documentary publications.

“I am confident that the new format of ongoing interaction with the councils of federal district archival institutions that we propose, will bring archival education and its integration with the archival sector to the level of the strategic goals now set before archives, historical education, and higher education as a whole,” concluded Andrei Loginov.

He reminded everyone that this autumn the Institute celebrated its 95th anniversary and invited the meeting participants to the festive events and exhibition, which would take place at RSUH at the end of September.
