Under the sign of Leo and Unicorn: Sunday lecture hall "Meetings on Nikolskaya" resumed its work

On October 6, the first lecture of the new academic year was held at the Institute of History and Archives of RSUH as part of the Sunday lecture series "Meetings on Nikolskaya".

"It is no coincidence that today's lecture on the history of book printing in Russia is being given here, because the complex on Nikolskaya is unique in the history of our country. Indeed, this is the very place where Ivan Fedorov began printing his "Apostle" in 1564," said Philip Taratorkin, Dean of the Faculty of Archival Science and Documentation of RSUH.

A pressing issue of our time is the availability of diverse information for everyone via the Internet, but we often encounter "false data" that seek to alter the picture of the world.

"The desire to understand the events of history, to build a continuity and communication with professionals are the most important conditions for us to move forward in understanding life," said Acting Rector Andrei Loginov.

He expressed hope that subsequent lectures would also be popular, since all of them would be helping to look at our history from a special angle, from the angle of historical truth:

"We find ourselves within the walls of the Institute of History and Archives, which has trained unique specialists and preserved the historical tradition and science in our country. Thanks to all these generations, today we can confidently say that history, as a science, enjoys significant respect in Russia, and, of course, ours is one of the best historical schools in the world. Therefore, we open our doors to you. Welcome to our lecture hall."

The presentation "Under the Sign of Leo and Unicorn: Moscow Printing Yard in the History of Russian Culture" was given by Dr. Evgeny Pchelov, Chair of the Department of Auxiliary Historical Disciplines and Archeography of RSUH. The topic was the history of the Printing Yard, which is located on the campus of RSUH on Nikolskaya 15. Dr. Pchelov began with a story about the origins of printing in the world and its history in Russia. The book trade began to actively develop in the 1550s: this was due to two circumstances: the distortion of Orthodox texts due to a many re-writings and the Christianization of the new population as a result of the annexation of Kazan.

The organizer of the "Meetings" is the Faculty of Archival Science and Documentation. The next lecture by Dr. Filipp Taratorkin, “To Preserve Forever: Archives Yesterday and Today,” will take place on October 20 at 12:00, on Nikolskaya Street.
