Soft Humanities Skills as a Foundation for Success: What Was Discussed at RSUH’s Intellectual Club Meeting

RSUH hosted a meeting of its Intellectual Club on the topic “Specialization vs. Holism/Pedology vs. Pedagogy”. Participants included Presidential Advisor and Chairman of the Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights Valery Fadeev, editor-in-chief of the “Monocle” magazine Tatyana Gurova, Vice-Rector of HSE Tatyana Vasilieva, and Head of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at KSU Vladimir Menshikov.

The meeting was moderated by Rector Andrei Loginov, who reminded attendees that, according to the decree “On the National Development Goals of the Russian Federation Until 2030 and for the Future Until 2036”, one of the goals was to realize the potential of each person, reveal their talents, and foster patriotic and socially responsible individuals.

According to Rector Loginov, in order to shape such individuals, Russian universities must enhance soft humanities skills: reflection, critical analysis, and creative modeling.

“To develop such competencies, RSUH, as a leading Russian university, will create all the necessary conditions and build its educational process on humanitarian principles. This applies not only to academic courses but also to aspects that help shape thinking and ethical values in students,” emphasized Dr. Loginov.

Valery Fadeev added:

“Today, both education and humanities are going through a very difficult and important period. Our President has said that Russia must achieve sovereignty, including in science and education. This doesn’t mean isolating ourselves or ignoring the experience of other nations. But it is crucial that our science and education reflect the spirit of our country.”

During the discussion, the participants noted the need to build a coherent educational content structure that supported the holistic development of personality and to preserve intellectualism as the key feature of Russian education.
