International archaeological conference “Object in the context of funeral rite”

On January 28, RSUH hosted the opening of the Conference. It is next in a series of conferences organized by academic institutions of St. Petersburg, Moscow and the cities of the Urals.

“Our goal is not publication of field materials, but academic synthesis, discussion of topics that can be given new interpretations,” said Dr. Marina Kilunovskaya, senior researcher at the Department of Archeology of Central Asia and the Caucasus at the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the RAS. - When we conducted digs of burial grounds and barrows, sometimes it turned out that as much as 95% of them had been looted. There was a feeling that this was connected not just with the extraction of treasures, but with certain post-funeral actions of relatives. In research, it is important to use natural science methods. I think the next conference will be devoted to finding out about the life of people as can be traced via funeral rites. Even from the insignificant residues, you can find out what clothes they had, what they ate, what the weather conditions were, what tools were made of; it will be interesting to find answers to these questions.”
