“Tryst of an Assamese with Foreign Languages and Cultures”
(Gauhaty University, Assam, India)
Research papers, based on the following, but by no means exhaustive, sub-themes, are invited from acclaimed as well as aspiring academicians and research scholars.
1) Krishna Kanta Handiqui and European languages & literatures
2) Krishna Kanta Handiqui as a Comparatist
3) Krishna Kanta Handiqui as an Orientalist/Indologist
4) Krishna Kanta Handiqui’s Ideas on Education in Europe and India
5) Study of Foreign Languages in Assam/India.
6) Translations of European Classics into Assamese and other Indian languages.
7) Role of Translations in Enriching National and Regional Literatures
8) Translation and Culture
9) Foreign Language Pedagogy
10) Studying World Literature in the Third World/Postcolonial Context
Papers may be presented in English, Assamese, Hindi, French or Russian.

Prof. Kandarpa Das, organizer, welcomed the Symposium participants, guests, and thanked the Department of Foreign Languages’ teachers and students for helping this event.
Prof. Pratap J. Handik, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gauhaty welcomed the participants and said that he was very glad that the joint academic conference became annual.
This year the topic of our joint Indo-Russian seminar is dedicated to the founder of Gauhati University and his first Vice chancellor (1948) - prof. Krishna Kant Handique, whose literary and translation activities are known all over the world.
It is significant that Krishna Kanta Handique was a polyglot. He also learned the Russian language and for many years acquainted his people with the news of literature and culture of Russia.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gauhati also noted that cooperation in the field of cultural and scientific relations is based on long-term exchange programs in the field of culture, science and education in accordance with intergovernmental agreements.
The MOU between the University of Gauhati and the RSUH confirms that universities in Russia and India can organize such large-scale international events as symposia and seminars.
The welcoming address of prof. Alexander Bezborodov, rector of RSUH was delivered by prof. A.A. Stolyarov in which the high scientific level of the joint Symposium dedicated to Professor Krishna Kant Handikque, the first VC of Gauhati University and Sanskrit scientist was noted.
The works of Russian classics writers as well as Ivan Turgenev, Leo Tolstoy, Alexander Pushkin, V. Aksakov etc became famous among the Assam people due to the translations of Professor Krishna Kant Handique. The Rector of the RSUH wished all participants fruitful discussions and new achievements.
The “Russia-India” calendar, created by students of the ART-Desof ign Center of RSUH under the guidance of Dr Tatyana Borisova was gifted by prof A. Stolyarov to VC Gauhati University.
Technical editing of the calendar was conducted by Dr Andrey Shulika.
Prof. Ranjit Kumar Devgoswami (Tezpur University) spoke about the literary activities of Krisna Kant Handikque and his literary activities at Oxford University at the plenary session.
Russia was represented by participants from Moscow State University, RSUH and Kazan Federal University:
Arina Novikova - Faculty of History, Moscow State University (MSU),
Alexander Stolyarov and Indira Gazieva, Russian State University for the Humanities
(Russian State Humanitarian University).
Elmira Khabibulina, Guzel Mratkhuzina, Dmitriy Bobkov, Daniel Mratkhuzin - Kazan (Volga) State Federal University (KFU).
The symposium’s working languages were: English, Assamese, Hindi, French and Russian.
12 sessions took place during the conference.
The problems of culture in the areas of translation and language learning, such as translation and multiculturalism, multilingualism, language and translation, translation in Indian languages and translations from Russian into Indian languages, marginocentricity and translation, gender mainstreaming translation and cultural diversity in literature were discussed in the reports of d speeches of Indian participants.
